What should a monthly digital marketing retainer include?

Commercial

Question answered: What should a monthly digital marketing retainer include?

A monthly retainer should purchase a defined operating system, not unlimited access to an undefined list of marketing services. The agreement needs enough flexibility to respond to evidence while remaining clear about capacity, deliverables, responsibilities, and additional costs.

Three points to use.

  • Name recurring activities, planned deliverables, capacity limits, and response times.
  • Keep media spend, production, software, taxes, and other third-party charges visible.
  • Use a monthly planning and review cycle with owners, decisions, and carried-forward work.
01

Start with the working scope

The agreement should identify the business objective, audiences, services, channels, markets, accounts, deliverables, meeting cadence, and expected client inputs. Broad phrases such as full digital marketing are not a substitute for a scope.

02

Define the monthly operating cycle

A practical cycle includes review, planning, production, approvals, launch or publishing, quality checks, reporting, and the next action list. State when information and approvals are needed and how delays affect delivery.

  • Planning date and decision owner
  • Production and approval windows
  • Publishing or campaign responsibilities
  • Tracking and quality checks
  • Review date and next-month priorities
03

State deliverables and capacity limits

List recurring outputs and the rules that control workload, such as channels, campaigns, page work, content formats, quantity ranges, revision rounds, meetings, support hours, and turnaround. If priorities can be exchanged within a capacity, explain who approves the change and what moves out.

04

Clarify costs, access, and ownership

Separate the retainer from advertising spend, hosting, software, production, licences, creators, travel, taxes, and other suppliers. Record who owns the domain, ad accounts, analytics, source files, data, and approved work, plus what access remains available after the engagement.

05

Agree reporting, renewal, and exit terms

The monthly review should show completed work, available performance, data limits, observations, unresolved items, and assigned actions. The contract should also state the term, notice period, payment timing, pause rules, handover, confidentiality, and treatment of unfinished work.
